Properties
The root of great burnet has hemostatic, astringent, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, wound-healing, diuretic, and calming properties.
As the ancient Romans correctly observed, great burnet has hemostatic and blood-purifying properties. Therefore, it is used to stop all types of bleeding: wound, gastric, pulmonary, hemorrhoidal and – especially often – uterine bleeding, including post-abortion. At the same time, despite its hemostatic effect, it dissolves blood clots and is used for thrombosis of the extremities. With its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, great burnet can help women suffering from cervical erosion and ovarian inflammation.
Great burnet is often used externally. It is used to wash wounds, burns and trophic ulcers, accelerating their healing; in the form of lotions, it is used to reduce boils, abscesses, acne. Helps to resorb bruises in bruised areas. Prevents blood poisoning in case of skin damage. In the form of rinses and douches, it relieves inflammation and heals damage to mucous tissues.
The plant’s preparations are taken internally if a person has contracted an intestinal infection (typhoid, dysentery); to increase diuresis and eliminate toxins. Great burnet acts as a mild sedative on the nervous system; however, it raises blood pressure.
Method of application
Decoction: 1 tbsp. of great burnet roots pour a glass of water, boil for 30 minutes, infuse for 2 hours, strain. Take 1 5 times a day.
Infusion: 2 tbsp. of great burnet roots pour 300 ml of water, boil for 30 minutes, infuse for 2 hours, strain. Use for lotions, rinses, washings and wet compresses.
Contraindications
Decoctions and tinctures based on great burnet should not be used in cases of constipation, blood pressure problems, blood vessel spasms, thrombophlebitis, and increased blood clotting.
