Iceland moss (Cetraria icelandica) is a lichen known for its medicinal properties. It has a wide range of uses in folk and traditional medicine.
Healing properties
1. Anti-inflammatory effect – relieves inflammation in the respiratory tract, stomach and intestines. 2. Antibacterial activity – helps fight pathogenic microorganisms. 3. Calming effect – has a calming effect on the mucous membranes. 4. Immunomodulatory effect – increases immunity. 5. Enveloping effect – protects the mucous membrane of the stomach and larynx from irritation. 6. Expectorant effect – facilitates the discharge of phlegm.
Indications for use:
- Respiratory diseases: bronchitis, asthma, tuberculosis, cough;
- Gastrointestinal disorders: gastritis, ulcer, diarrhea, bloating;
- Decreased immunity;
- External wounds and skin inflammation;
- Recovery from illness or exhaustion;
- Problems with hoarseness or dry throat.
How to use:
Icelandic moss for cough
Recipe No. 1:
1 tbsp. l. ground dried Icelandic moss or 2 tbsp. l. whole per 500 ml of water. 1. Pour Icelandic moss with cold water.
2. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
3. Cook for 20-30 minutes until thickened.
4. Remove from heat and leave to infuse for 15-20 minutes. How to take:
• Drink warm, 100 ml 3-4 times a day 30 minutes before meals.
• The course of treatment is 7-10 days or until the symptoms disappear.
Recipe No. 2:
- Icelandic moss in the amount of 2 teaspoons pour 250 ml. milk.
- Boil the mixture for half an hour.
- The resulting infusion should be drunk before going to bed.
A decoction of Icelandic moss milk will perfectly reduce the intensity of cough caused by whooping cough.
Decoction for gastrointestinal diseases
- Pour 3 cups of boiling water over 6 tbsp. spoonfuls of Icelandic moss,
- Boil for 30 minutes, cool, filter.
- Drink sips throughout the day.
Cleaning wounds, wounds, acne and boils
1 tbsp. l. Icelandic moss is poured with 250 ml of water and boiled for 10 minutes. The decoction is used to wash wounds and make lotions.
2 large spoons are poured into a glass of water, boiled for 15 minutes, this solution is drunk, and the face is wiped with it.
Contraindications
Individual sensitivity or allergy;
Pregnancy and lactation (use only on doctor’s recommendation);
Children under 3 years of age (with caution);
Acute stomach diseases (increased acidity, severe exacerbation of ulcers).
