Healing properties
The main medicinal effect of the root of this plant is determined by the alkaloid berberine. It improves bile secretion, stabilizes the heart rate and stimulates the uterine muscles. Berberine eliminates inflammation, relieves gallbladder spasms and pain attacks that occur when a stone blocks the bile duct.
In addition, barberry root has astringent, bactericidal, antitumor and antimicrobial properties.
Barberry root alkaloids lower blood pressure and improve heart function. Decoctions, water and alcohol tinctures are used as a diuretic in the complex treatment of kidney disease, urolithiasis and dropsy.
Preparations from the root of this plant are used for mouthwash in case of gum disease. Lotions and washings are used to treat eczema and eye inflammation, and compresses and rubs are used for sciatica, gout, arthritis, and rheumatism. The good hemostatic properties of barberry root help to stop internal bleeding.
Aqueous decoction of barberry root is a good remedy for douching and bathing in case of gynecological diseases accompanied by inflammation and pain.
Method of application
Decoction: Pour 1 tablespoon of barberry root with two glasses of boiling water. After boiling over low heat for 10 minutes, the broth should be infused for 3 hours. After straining, it is drunk three times a day, 150 ml, half an hour before meals. The decoction is used to stabilize heart rate, lower blood pressure, as well as for stomach cramps, diarrhea and dysentery.
Alcohol tincture: Pour 50 g of barberry root with 500 ml of 40% alcohol and put in a dark place for 2-3 weeks to insist. The tincture is taken 30 drops 3 times a day, diluted in 100 ml of water for half an hour before meals. It is used in case of internal bleeding, as well as for compresses and rubbing in case of inflammatory diseases of joints and muscles.
Contraindications
Barberry root should not be used in case of brain spasms, during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and in case of thrombophlebitis. In case of bleeding caused by menopause, a doctor’s consultation is required.
